Introduction
In February of 2024, AMD launched the Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) for sale worldwide. This card is positioned between the Radeon RX 7800 XT and the Radeon RX 7900 XT in performance and pricing with an MSRP of $549. The worldwide release seemed to be a response to the launch of NVIDIA’s RTX 40 SUPER series. At any rate, a video card that was aimed initially at only the Chinese market was now available worldwide at an appealing price point. In today’s review, we’ve got the top-end SKU from ASUS’s lineup of Radeon RX 7900 GRE’s with the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition (ASUS TUF-RX7900GRE-O16G-GAMING) with an MSRP of $599.99.
Currently, the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE is the top-of-the-line for ASUS as such it includes all the familiar TUF Gaming features: distinctly subdued design, very quiet triple fan cooling, a massive heatsink, military-spec components, a full metal shroud and discrete RGB logo. This video card also has a high factory overclock. On ASUS’s product page for AMD GPUs, you’ll find that ASUS offers another Radeon RX 7900 GRE based video card, the ASUS Dual Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition which has dual fans and a lower factory overclock than the TUF version, it sits just right below it in pricing.
The reference AMD specifications and design of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE are nicely reviewed in our launch article. The Radeon RX 7900 GRE is an AIB partner exclusive. There is no Made by AMD in this line-up of video cards. The baseline MSRP at the US launch was $549, of course, various customizations, offerings, and overclocks will determine each partner’s final pricing. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition is currently available on the ASUS e-store and Amazon for $599. It carries a three-year warranty.
ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition
As mentioned our card has a factory overclock. The baseline clocks for the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE are 1800MHz Game Clock and 2245MHz Boost Clock. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition clock speeds at default are: 1972MHz for the Game Clock and 2333MHz for the Boost Clock. Therefore, you get a 10% increase for the Game Clock and a 4% increase for the Boost Clock.
Alternatively, you can enable an OC Mode from the ASUS GPU Tweak III software which will further boost that factory overclock up to: 2052MHz Game Clock and 2391MHz Boost Clock, giving you even further performance with ease. The video card has 16GB of VRAM on a 256-bit bus at 18Gbps, the same as the reference specifications.
The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition came to us in a full retail package directly from ASUS. Overall, the box has a premium feel to it. The video card is well seated in formed foam. In a separate slot are accessories: TUF certificate of Reliability, TUF Gaming Graphics Card Holder, TUF Velcro Hook & Loop, Collection card, Thank you card, Speedsetup Manual.
This is a well-made, thick video card with some heft to it. The fit and finish of the card is excellent. The shroud and slotted backplate are solid aluminum in the gray industrial motif we have seen in the TUF series of products. There are three 100mm axial fans. The center spins opposite the outer two. These are 11-blade fans attached at the outer edge and all the fans are dual ball bearings. ASUS states 23% improved airflow.
The heatsink is massive, and the shroud is elevated above the sink and PCB for maximizing cooling. The PCB is assembled in an automated fashion using “mil-spec” components. On the upper right edge of the card is a small RGB logo. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition uses Military-grade capacitors rated for 20K hours at 105c. It also has a tough metal exoskeleton to add structural rigidity and is vented to increase heat dissipation.
The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition measures 12.6 x 5.94 x 2.33 inches (319.8 x 150.9 x 59.2 mm), and is a full 2.96-slot card, you might as well say 3-slot. The weight is just shy of 3 pounds. The I/O is stainless steel and features three Display ports and one HDMI connection.
The card is powered by two additional PCIe 8 pin connections. This video card does have a dual BIOS switch. It sits in “Performance mode” by default. The other mode is “Quiet mode”. Switching BIOS modes has no effect on performance, only fan speeds. The total Board Power is listed at 260 Watts with a minimum 750-watt PSU recommendation. The RGB portion of the card requires ASUS AURA Sync which is available via ASUS Armory Crate download.
